Meeting Minutes: January 11, 2012

Just a reminder that our meeting this week has been CHANGED from Wednesday (the 25th) to Thursday (the 26th).  Still at 5:30.  Still in Postle 1188.

Dental students of various ranks from Psi Omega and Dental Sigma Delta will be coming in to talk about the benefits of getting involved in either fraternity, as well as to talk about dental school in general.

If you are a new member or have not yet paid your member dues, we will be collecting those at the beginning and end of the meeting.  Annual dues are $20.  Keep in mind that you will not be able to vote or run in the spring elections if your dues aren't paid.  Also, events and activities where space is limited will be open only to members who have paid dues.

There will be food again, as always.  Also, we had a GREAT turn-out for the first meeting of the quarter!  We love to see members getting involved and showing an interest in the club.

Application to go to Chicago

-
Andrew Boehm went over the new
Ohio State dental school pre-reqs after the semester conversion starting Fall 2012. This will mostly be affecting the freshmen, sophomores, and juniors. Here is a list of the classes you will need to take for Ohio State's college of dentistry:

--
Anatomy 2300 [this is a class comparable to Anatomy 199 under quarters. If possible try taking this your senior year so it is fresh in your mind as a D1 student. Anatomy 199 prepares you better for the D1 anatomy class vs Anatomy 200...so try to keep this is mind when scheduling]
--
Biochemistry 4511
--
Biology 1113,1114
--
Inorganic Chemistry 1210,1220 [From chemistry 121-123 in quarters to only two semester classes. this is one of the bigger changes the semester conversion is bringing about; also, "bridge classes" will be offered if you have started gen chem under quarters and need to finish the sequence under semesters...these classes and the conversion chart for chemistry can be found at the Dept of Chemistry osu website]
--
Organic Chemistry 2510, 2520
--
English 1110/ Advanced Composition 3672
-
-Microbiology 4000
--
Physics 1200
--
Physiology 3101

Meeting Minutes: November 30, 2011

Earlier last week, Dr. Chuck from Case Western gave a presentation about Case's dental school.

At last weeks meeting, Leah and Jack discussed the process you should take when choosing what schools to apply to, and they divulged some information about some schools that club members have traditionally applied to. Attached is the powerpoint. One of the obvious things you should focus on when picking out schools is their
academic standards. Look at the profiles of the previous year's admitted class and see how your numbers match up. You want to make sure that you are competitive at that university. Don't apply to Harvard if you have a 2.9 G.P.A. basically. Be realistic.

Next look at how many seats that school usually gives to students that are
out of state. Some universities like Eastern Carolina ONLY admit in state residents. Other schools like North Carolina have extremely limited seats. Tuition is a huge factor as well. Out of state and private school tuition is very expensive so keep that in mind. Lastly, and most importantly, pick the school that is a good fit for you. See what kind of programs they have, what the campus is like, it's location, etc. The key to being successful in school is feeling at home with your university. Feel a connection a choose wisely.
[Brought to you by Ian Hall]

Announcements:   T-SHIRTS are in!!!! If you didn't get yours, you can pick it up at the next meeting. The shirts this year are SAWEET some wear them proudly. If you have not picked up your t-shirt yet, Leah will be at the Biological Sciences library TODAY til one

Service/Shadowing:  Also, Don't forget to sign up for the Relay for Life team if you are interested. Help us raise money to fight cancer and have some fun! Additionally, this holiday break can be a great time for volunteering and shadowing! This is also a great time to give back to your community, not to mention getting in those hours!

Last announcement: next year we will be having the same bi-monthly meetings at 5:30pm in Postle 1188 and once those dates are determined, we will keep you updated!

Dental Schools

Meeting Minutes: November 9, 2011

What you should know:
The DAT is a five hour exam that accounts for 20-30% of your application score.  All of the questions on the exam are multiple choice.  It consist of four sections: Natural Sciences, Perceptual Ability (PAT..this section is fun), Reading Comprehension, and Math. The test is scored on a scale from 1-30. Your total science is comprised of the natural science section, your academic average includes your reading and math scores, and the PAT stands alone.  The national average for the test is a 17, and the average for acceptance falls between a 19-21 range.

Natural Sciences – 90 minutes for 100 questions
Biology: 40 questions

General Chemistry: 30 questions
Organic Chemistry: 30 questions
Courses that will help:
EEOB 400
Biochem 511
Mol Gen 500
Bio 113 &114
Micro 509
Chem 121, 122, 123
Organic Chemistry 251, 252, 253, 254, 255

PAT: 60 minutes for 90 questions
Consists of: angle ranking, key hole, cube counting, pattern folding, top-front-side view, and hole punching.  Engineering Graphics 121 will really help with the top-front-side views and key holes.  These are kind of tricky as you convert a two-dimensional image into a three-dimensional one.

Reading Comprehension: 60 minutes for 50 questions
You will be given three passages, two are science and the third is usually random.  It pays to have a strategy for this section, like devising a “roadmap”. Be efficient with your time as this gives students the most difficulty. Try reading some scientific articles that are dense reading. This may help for practicing the reading section.

Mathematics: 45 minutes for 40 questions
This is the only section where you will be provided with a basic function calculator on the computer. Important to brush up on your trig and geometry, unit conversions, and probability.  Estimation is beneficial here as you can save time, and try to avoid using the calculator.  There will also be word problems so it is vital that you can extract pertinent information from the question.

WAYS TO PREPARE:
Taking a class through Kaplan or Princeton Review are extremely beneficial.  They have homework assignments, full length practice tests, and it is a classroom setting which forces you to devote time to preparation.  For those strong willed scholars, you can also prepare on your own and save some money. Crack PAT is a great tool for acclimating yourself to the PAT, and eventually annihilating it. DAT Destroyer is a program that gives you tons of questions to prepare.  There are also plenty of other books and software online that will lead you to your desired score.

Announcements:

DAT Studying:  Ian Hall.1436 is selling his brand new Kaplan course pack for $50. Contact Ian if you would like to purchase it.

Social Events:  The t-shirts have been ordered and will be in sometime after Thanksgiving. We are hoping they come in sometime before the last meeting of the quarter. Also, no more orders will be taken after today.

We will also organize carpools to the
WILDLIGHTS so keep an eye out for that. We will be going on the 21st. We may also still have a few tickets left so if you are still interested in coming, contact Les Crawford.568.

Big/Little Event:  On November 28th we have planned a big/little event at BW3's. This will be a great opportunity to get to know your big as well as others in the club. Contact your big/little asap. Also, 15% will go to the club. Attached is the flyer and ticket you need for the event as well as the big/little sheet. Contact Jack Minnillo.7 for any questions.

Advising Session with Case:  The presentation and advising sessions with Case Western's admissions director will be rescheduled (he can no longer come on the 16th).  We will be keeping you updated for the rescheduled date as soon as we know.

Meeting Minutes: October 26, 2011

George Williams and Brad Kripke, who were both former presidents of PDC, came to speak to us about ASDA. ASDA is the American Student Dental Association, and as pre-dents we can apply and be a participant of this organization. Additionally, Brad Kripke discussed an alternative route to attend dental school by doing a Masters degree in Public Health. Here is a list of things to note from the meeting:

-What is ASDA:  Largest student run dental org in the nation. Protects and advanced the rights, interests and welfare of students pursuing a career in dentistry; 87% of all dental students participate.
-As predental students we can take advantage of ASDA by:  Access dental resources quickly, save money, make lifelong connections, build knowledge of dental school and application process, become a more competitive applicant, what you need to know/say to dental schools, you can also save 10% on KAPLAN course, up to 8% off on insurance from geico, free online dental resources, leadership opportunities and opportunity for networking.
-Becoming a member of ASDA for predental students is 68$ a year and membership runs from Jan 1 to Dec 31 for the year.
- Member benefits for predents include:  A copy of “getting into dental school” –breakdown of getting into dental schools, ASDAs predent handbook that answers questions about applying to dental school, DAT, interview tips—very helpful book! Includes a listing of all US dental schools and admission requirements. FREE COPY.
-Free subscription to publications that keep you updated on current issues in dentistry, perfect for finding topics to talk about in your interviews [ASDA News]. Dental schools want to see you be interested and knowledgeable about dental topics and news.
-ASDA website, www.ASDAnet.org
-www.ASDAblog.com – news blog that dental students update and discuss the real side of dental school
-join the facebook group and visit the youtube channel, which includes history of ASDA. Also ASDA  photos on flickr
-Osu chapter: student council of dental school visit Asda.org.ohio-state.edu  where you can find great gifts—white strips and become knowledgeable about whats going on in our dental school
-If you have any more questions regarding ASDA, contact George Williams.2814@osu.edu

Brad Kripke shared with us his story about how he got into dental school after completing a master’s in public health. His notes of advice are:

-Schedule an appt with admissions counselors to learn more about your options if you are not confident in your application.
-Masters if completed, will replace your GPA. Masters programs are shaped differently; in masters program profs actually care, much more doable to do well.
-Masters in public health- college of public health.  Prevention side of medicine. Dentistry and PH go hand in hand [fluoride, flossing]. Visit  http://cph.osu.edu/academics/mph for more information.
-Academics- PH core courses can be found on website, epidemiology, preventing disease, organization, etc, environmental health is most relevant to dentistry [microbiology,].
-No thesis—finish with working in the field you are interested in. Brad worked in a mobile dental unit in Columbus city schools, opportunity to work with college of dentistry.
-Application for masters- similar to the one for dental school, but accepts DAT in place of GRE.
- Takes 1-2 years to complete degree
- for more information contact Brad kripke.2@osu.edu
