Meeting Minutes: May 2, 2012

Representatives from Comfort Dental came and gave us a presentation on what Comfort Dental is and how it is different. If you missed the meeting, here is a few notes:
·         -Comfort Dental is a franchise with the aim of being a private practice.
·         -Dentists are able to equally own the practice together, bringing in more patients/month and more revenue
·         -Because CD is a franchise, it has discounts at labs—which allows the practice to spend less and increase profits
·         -There is no office manager; dentists talk to the patients and figure out treatment plans…overall makes a more personal experience for the patient
·         -Doctors also conduct the “care call” and “exit interview” because again, the aim is to have the best experience for the patient to keep them coming back and referring their friends.
·         -Tips CD gave to all upcoming dentists to make them successful:
o   Get to know your patient
o   Be organized
o   Posses leadership and have confidence
o   Make sure front office is friendly [they are the face of the practice]
o   Be likeable and approachable
·        - What is CD?
o   Top 3 group in nation; discounts allow for higher profit margin
o   Doctors coordinate work together; where each doctor is an equal owner of the practice
o   Nationwide franchise; looking for new dentists [even ones straight out of dental school]
o   Franchise fees cover having the name Comfort Dental associated with practice = 4%/month
o   There is a commitment associated with this; but if you ever want to leave you can, which lets another doctor buy you out
o   Earn 3x national average [bc save of lab fees, and so many doctors in once practice = more patients can come]
o   New doctors can work at their own comfort level…which gets better and better as older doctors can help them out
·        - Doctors set up patient payment options, according to the patients income/status/ etc

Meeting Minutes: February 8, 2012

Meeting Minutes:  Hope this week is treating you well. On Wednesday we discussed potential interview questions you may encounter if interviewing at Ohio State College of Dentistry. Here are a few things to consider if you missed the meeting:
Interview questions on the dental school website can be found here:
http://dent.osu.edu/admissions/Example_Interview_Questions.pdf.

Note:  There may or may not be a time limit to the questions and each school has a different method of delivery to how the questions and interview themselves are done.
http://studentdoctor.net/schools/?view=dental  < Jack's website with all of the interview statistics and info

If you want to look at an example personal statement, Leah Ward, Jack Minnillo, Les Crawford, Ian Hall and Alyssa Loparich are willing to send copies of theirs.  If you're interested, email them (ward.705, minnillo.7, crawford.568, hall.1436, loparich.1).

1.
Why have you chosen to pursue this profession?
-come up with something heartfelt; family experience/involvement
-don’t say you want to make $/ flexible schedule,
- focus on how you have a desire to help people, knowledgeable about the field
-always advancing field; interesting; technology always growing, progressing field
-Working with your hands. Practice: random hand skills, sports, cooking,  always be honest. Don’t lie they will find out. Musical skills, arts,
How you need to attack this question:   find out as much as you can about field; Chicago, ODA, shadowing, observing; patient-doctor interactions; pay attention to procedures; ongoing interest and shadowing gives that experience; make most of your time, down time with doctors, visit with hygienists; learn more from staff

2.
How is dentistry multi faceted?
-Pay attention to new technology. Multi faceted; accountant, businessman, owner

3.
Academic and research experience questions:
-be prepared
-Michigan interview asks if you want to discuss a low point in your application: you can talk or don’t talk about down point on application, but it’s a way to acknowledge something and clarify
-research:  know what you are talking about, ask them out how you as a dental student can get involved or what kind of opportunities there are in dental school,
- If  you need it, a portfolio if given but don’t look through it. Research the school, ask about programs, extra curriculars, student-doctor forum is a great resource in which applicants share what exact questions they were asked at interviews
Note: Study for the interviews, spin negative things in a positive way.

4.
Probability to serve type questions:  Where dentistry is going?
- targeted underserved areas. State will pay tuition back if you work in underserved areas.
-example: ohio state—ohio project; Maryland: serve community for 10 weeks.
-Be willing to give back to community. Volunteer long term hospital setting; big brothers and big sisters; hands on central ohio website for volunteer opportunities:
http://www.handsoncentralohio.org/

5.
Miscellaneous questions:
- don’t take these for granted….Defintely think about
ADEA AND AADSAS application notes:
-order matters on application: most important first, can put stuff from high school.
-Academic enrichment: minor, honors, mid winter meeting, oda, study abroad,
-research can share paid/unpaid.
-Deferral policies: can under special circumstances
-Personal statement must demonstrate that you are knowledgeable, motivated, prepared, articulate, socially conscious about profession, make you stand out.  Put some thought, have people you don’t know to read it.
-Have it done before you apply [june first]
-# of Letters of rec—depends on the school—make sure to find out
